What is 'Back to Hockey'

Back to Hockey is an opportunity for women of all ages and abilities to get involved in the wonderful game of hockey. Whether you previously played hockey and haven't for a while, or haven't played since school, this is a chance to learn some new skills, make some new friends and fall back in love with the sport. Following on from the first 3 sessions, if you want to play more, Wick will incorporate you into 3rd team, training on Tuesdays at Fairfield School from 7.30 - 9.

What do I need to bring with me?

If you don't have a stick, don't worry we have plenty of spare sticks and you can wear any sports trainers for your first few practises. We do recommend getting some shin pads, as the ball does hurt if it lands on your shin. If you intend to stay on playing hockey we do recommend buying and bringing your own gum shield, shin pads and hockey gloves. We can help by recommending the best places to go and you can usually get a discount on kit from shops by being a member of the club.

I am a shift worker- can I still join the club?

Yes, of course! In an ideal world we would like players to attend every training session and be available for league games, but unlike other hockey clubs, we understand that this isn't always possible. As long as you show commitment and passion to the sport, we don't mind.

What is it really like playing for Wick Ladies?

Previous Third Team Captain, now Welfare Officer, Chloe, breaks it down for you:

"The last time I'd played hockey I was in school. That was about 12 years ago. Since I moved to Bristol 3 years ago I'd thought a few times about picking hockey up again, but my confidence was knocked a few times when I'd emailed several clubs and they said they were only looking for high ability league players. Then I found Wick Ladies! I started playing with Wick last summer during their last Back to Hockey campaign. Arriving at my first training session I was very nervous and apprehensive as my fitness was pretty ropey, I had next to no hockey skills and I didn't know anybody. I had nothing to worry about, though as everyone was so friendly and welcoming. What I really like about Wick is it's a family made up of women of different ages, sizes and backgrounds and the club has a family, community vibe. I'd originally planned to attend training and play just for fun but within a few weeks my competitive nature got the better of me and I wanted to get involved in league games. I didn't really have a clue what I was doing but everyone was really supportive and I soon learnt some new skills. Fast forward 10 months and I have grown in confidence, I have learnt a lot and more importantly I have made some really good friends and I've been 3rd team Captain, for a season, I'm currently Welfare Officer for the Club"
